Tutorial: Top 10 Augmented Reality SDKs for Developers

AWE 2013 ended over 2 months ago and the amazing energy generated by attendees can still be felt: “There is a gold rush mentality in Augmented Reality” says said John Jackson, an analyst for market tracker IDC.
Many new “diggers” (aka developers) are joining the space and one of the first question asked is: “what are the best AR SDKs in the market?”

Luckily, Patrick O’Shaughnessey, our AWEsome CTO, did a fantastic job answering this question in his tutorial at AWE 2013.

The 3 hour session lead by Patrick reviewed the best Mobile AR SDKs in the market and how to get started with them, followed by vendor presentations featuring: 13th Lab, Metaio, Vuforia by Qualcomm, Total Immersion, and Wikitude.

Oskar Linde is CEO and cofounder of 13th Lab, a startup working on computer vision for mobile devices. 13th Lab’s technology and browser understands and tracks both 2D and 3D environments. In 2011, 13th Lab released the first iOS consumer application based on SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), a technique for modeling and tracking 3D spaces in real time. Since then the company has made huge improvements in speed, accuracy and map size, and are making this technology available to both regular web pages through the PointCloud Browser and to native iOS and Android applications through the PointCloud SDK.

At 13th Lab AB, our primary focus is to develop products in the field of Computer Vision for mobile devices. We are a small startup that believes the camera has the potential to be the most important device sensor, and we are hard at work building the tools to enable this. Advanced computer vision is complicated, and we want to make it freely available to all developers.

13th Lab got started a few years ago as an outlet for a few friends to work on fun side projects together. In early 2010 we started looking at computer vision for mobile devices. We realized that devices were getting close to powerful enough to be able to handle advanced computer vision tasks.

Since early 2011, we are working full time at 13th Lab in our office in Stockholm, Sweden. Our first product, the game Ball Invasion for iPad 2, is available in the App Store. Ball Invasion is the first implementation of our computer vision platform. It is the first and only SLAM implementation in the App Store.
