Since being made available under the GPL license in 2004, ARToolkit and its many variations have been downloaded nearly 900,000 times and can truly be said to have started a new industry. It is now available on Mac, PC, Linux, iOS, android, win8 mobile, Flash and Silverlight. It has also been ported to C# and java and integrated into a host of other products including Unity 3D, Maya, 3DS Max, Nemetschek Scia Engineer and Vectorworks, Maxon Cinema 4D and Trimble Sketchup. In 2012, there were nine separate releases of the product and numerous custom releases addressing specific customer requirements in addition to separate projects porting and optimizing the software for specific smart phones and Smart TV platforms.
