Jan Rabaey

Jan Rabaey holds the Donald O. Pederson Distinguished Professorship at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department of the University of California at Berkeley. After receiving his Ph.D degree in applied sciences from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, he joined UC Berkeley in 1983 as a Visiting Research Engineer. From 1985 until 1987, he was a research manager at IMEC, Belgium. Professor Rabaey has created and/or directed a number of high-impact research centers, including the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC), the FCRP multi-university Gigascale Systems (GSRC) and MultiScale Systems (MuSyC) Research Centers, and most recently the Berkeley Ubiquitous Swarm Lab. He is also the executive director of the MAS-IC program, the first fully online degree program offered by UC Berkeley engineering. He is the recipient of a wide range of awards, amongst which the IEEE CAS Society Mac Van Valkenburg Award, the European Design Automation Association (EDAA) Lifetime Achievement award, and the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) University Researcher Award. He is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium. In 2012, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lund, Sweden. He has been involved as an advisor with a number of start-up companies and ventures, including Epic, Morphics, Sonics, Sequence, Simplex, ViMicro, Flarion, Cortera Neurotechnology and others. He serves on the advisory board of a broad range of semiconductor, design technology and wireless companies. His current research interests include the conception and implementation of next-generation integrated wireless systems, as well as exploring the interaction between the cyber and the biological world....

Nicolas Henchoz

Nicolas Henchoz

Nicolas Henchoz is an art director with a background in engineering, journalism and communication. He is the founder and director of the EPFL+ECAL Lab in Switzerland, a bridge between the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), and the University of Art and Design, Lausanne (ECAL). He has developed new strategies to turn emerging technologies into user experience through design exploration. His new book “Design for Innovative Technology” (Routledge, 2014) unveils his approach for disruptive innovation through several projects and more theoretical aspects, including perception, history and sociology. The EPFL+ECAL Lab research program on augmented reality is presented to the public through a constantly evolving exhibition called Gimme More. Featured at Eyebeam (NYC), The Royal College of Art ( London), Siggraph Asia or the Designer’s Days in Paris, it is the winner of the International Design Festival, Berlin. The research program creates visual, interactive and narrative principles to establish AR as a real media, in collaboration with the Computer Vision Laboratory of EPFL. Syuzi Pakhchyan is an experience designer whose work investigates the intersection between code, cloth and culture. Her design and research interests include wearable technologies, physical and soft computing, and interactive textile design. Her book “Fashioning Technology: A DIY Intro to Smart Crafting” explores the emerging creative practice of soft circuits and soft technologies. Syuzi’s projects have been exhibited at Eyebeam, an Art and Technology gallery in New York, the Fashion Future Event in Pisa, South by Southwest Festival, Maker Faire and Emerging Technologies Conference.
