“The Auggies” – a demo-jam session

Teams compete for the coolest 4 min. AR demo. A Luminary panel: Bruce Sterling, Will Wright, Vernor Vinge, And Jaron Lanier comment on demos American Idol-style. Winners will be determined by the audience and receive the prestigious “Auggies Award.”

Competing teams:

Previznet

The main difficulty faced by e-commerce retailers in certain markets, like home furnishing, is to provide their customers with a good idea of how the products they sell will look in the customer’s home. This has to be achieved without compromising the brand or reducing the appeal of the products. With Playviz consumers can upload a picture of their home and simply insert 3D furniture into the picture in less than 5 minutes. They can visualize how these items will look inside their home with an ultra-realistic rendition. Playviz is based on a novel Augmented Reality, self-calibrating, marker-less and high-definition technology.

Georgia Tech

As our entry for the Augies, we would like to select and demonstrate the best game from this year in the Qualcomm AR Game Studio at Georgia Tech. We cannot yet say what the specific game is, because we will not likely decide until the end of the semester (first week of May). However, with over 30 people from Georgia Tech and the Savannah College of Art and Design collaborating on games this semester, we expect to have one or more amazing games to show.

Mobilizy

Demoing newest development within the Wikitude product family

Whistlebox

Make your own HBO with sock puppets

Ogmento

A surprise demo from Ogmento, the creator of the geo-social augmented reality game Paranormal Activity Sanctuary.

Metaio

When the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers met for Superbowl XIV at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium to go head to head at this year’s Super Bowl, fans were able to enrich their experience with augmented reality tidbits, courtesy of USA TODAY and junaio. Junaio is currently the world’s most advanced Augmented Reality browser. For smartphone users, the Friday, February 4th edition of USA TODAY included a 360 degree tour of the Dallas Cowboys stadium, presented by Jerry Jones, stadium and Cowboys owner, along with interior and exterior highlights. The Monday, February 7th edition gave readers a 3D view of the “Play of the Game” in an animated sequence and an option to receive player stats. With the junaio channel “USATODAY 360 Stadium Tour“, the viewer finds himself right in the middle of the Cowboys Stadium enjoying a 360 degree view as he moves the camera around his own position. Clicking on the screen lets the user jump to where the players enter the stadium, down into the locker rooms or to view some of the famous murals of contemporary art decorating the interior of this fabulous stadium. For people reading about the game in USA TODAY’s Monday February 7th edition, junaio’s image recognition technology brings to life the Super Bowl “Play of the Game” in the junaio channel “USATODAY SuperBowl Key Play“. This is presented not as a video, but as a 3D animation, created within hours of the game, whereby the viewer’s camera angle is determined by the smartphone’s position relative to the newspaper picture so that every player’s move can be studied from different angles.

Vertigore

This demo focuses on showcasing Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner for iOS, which was named by Apple as one of its “Best of 2010″ apps for its immersiveness and pick-up-and-play gameplay.

Making Virtual Solid (MVS Labs)

3D in the HUD: Not just for the military any more.

LIVE IN-CAR DEMO will be shown outside the convention hall.

The MVSC “InLand Mobile” display system is an advanced, conformal* 3D, volumetric Head Up Display system designed to be small and robust enough for fleet-wide police and first-responder deployment, accurate to < 1 meter, and cost engineered to become – very soon – a standard tool for ordinary as well as military drivers, pilots and mariners. 2 or three years should see it on our roads. We’re negotiating with Big 3 and foreign auto companies as well as defense contractors to fully commercialize the system. “InLand” capabilities are exceptional. It can generate still or motion graphics at 60fps, re-cast aerial recon imagery, video, or generate a “guide wire” navigational line using high quality GPS. Previously considered unaffordble for ordinary drivers, 3D HUD now CAN make it into our cars, showing objects at distances from a few feet to infinity in the landscape. The difference is a highly unusual optical design, patents pending, and a team dedicated to pushing this to public markets by keeping our eyes firmly on cost control as well as quality.

* In a conformal display, images appear to “conform to” a true location in the landscape ahead, at appropriate depth cues. NASA pilot studies confirm that conformal display is essential to promoting maximum situational awareness and reducing tunneling caused by “head down” console maps and 2D windshield “pseudo HUD” displays that require the eye and brain to refocus many times between “car” and “road.”

Joinpad
The product conceived and developed by JoinPad, able to assist technician, involved in broadcast/teletransmission industry, during ordinary and extraordinary maintenance: from transmission system installation, antennas, microwawe links, broadcasting equipments (amplifiers, excitors, etc.) to generic maintenance. Through special HMD glasses equipped with a webcam, technicians will be able to recognize device and to get related instructions about specific operations to perform, the position and relative instructions about the best way to replace a hardware component part or to set up the system.

Mob Labs

Demonstration of the new version of Build AR by Mob Labs.

Churchill Navigation

Google Earth and similar programs show a synthetic view of the world using satellite and aerial imagery, overlayed with street information and points of interest. What if you could replace the satellite imagery with live video from an infrared camera? That’s just what airborne law enforcement agencies at every level around the world are doing with ARS, our augmented reality mapping system. From police in the Los Angeles Basin using it to catch burglars, to state highway patrols using it to apprehend car thieves, to organizations such as the FBI using it to keep our country safe, ARS is solving a difficult problem in an easy to use way.

Traveller AR

Starships and Aliens Live in AR Space: Traveller AR

Did you know there are aliens and starships hovering over your hometown right now? You can see them only through the Augmented Reality portal that is Traveller AR. Traveller-AR is an iPhone Space Game set in the Traveller universe (an established Pen & Paper RPG since 1977). Ingz, Inc. is brining the Traveller universe to life in your hometown.

Dokobots*

Dokobots is a parallel world built on top of the earth. Players pick up traveling robot friends and help them in their journeys as they explore our planet. Each player participates in a scavenger hunt to collect new Dokobots and follows the adventures as ‘bots visit new locations, gathering photos and notes from the people they meet. It’s been described as “tamagotchi geocaching” or “virtual traveling gnomes.
