Mark Billinghurst

Professor Mark Billinghurst is a researcher developing innovative computer interfaces that explore how virtual and real worlds can be merged. Director of the HIT Lab New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, he has produced over 250 technical publications and presented demonstrations and courses at a wide variety of conferences. He has a PhD from the University of Washington and conducts research in Augmented and Virtual Reality, multimodal interaction and mobile interfaces. He has previously worked at ATR Research Labs, British Telecom, Nokia and the MIT Media Laboratory. One of his research projects, the MagicBook, was winner of the 2001 Discover award for best Entertainment application, and his AR Tennis project won the 2005 IMG award for best independent mobile game. He was awarded the 2013 IEEE VR Technical Achievement Award for contributions to research and commercialization in Augmented Reality. Martin Lechner co-developed the first version of the Wikitude World Browser on the Android platform, and started building up the team behind the Wikitude technology soon after. He is now the CTO of Wikitude, part of the company management team and manages a team of 20+ developers. In addition to his day-to-day job at Wikitude, he is chairing the Augmented Reality Markup Language (ARML) 2.0 Standards Working Group within the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). ARML 2.0 has recently been published as an official OGC Standard for describing and interacting with AR scenes. Martin initiated and managed the group throughout the entire process, comprising more than 50 institutions and individuals, including several universities and multi-national companies. Martin studied both Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Salzburg, Austria and the Victoria University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. Ann McNamara is an Associate professor in the Department of Visualization at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on the advancement of computer graphics and scientific visualization through novel approaches for optimizing an individual’s experience when creating, viewing and interacting with virtual and augmented spaces. She is the recipient of an NSF CAREER AWARD entitled “Advancing Interaction Paradigms in Mobile Augmented Reality using Eye Tracking”. This project investigates how mobile eye tracking, which monitors where a person is looking while on the go, can be used to determine what objects in a visual scene a person is interested in, and thus might like to have annotated in their augmented reality view.
