Sphero

Sphero

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR Hardware Creator: Jon Carroll Organization: Orbotix, Inc. =*=*=*= Description: Sphero is a completely new type of gaming system. It’s the world’s first robotic ball that you control with a tilt, touch, or swing from your smartphone or tablet. You can drive Sphero, play tabletop and multiplayer games, hold Sphero in your hand to use it as a controller for on-screen gameplay, learn basic programming, and even explore augmented reality. Using Sphero as a moving augmented reality fiducial opens up entirely new realms of augmented reality gameplay. The game is no longer tied to a printed AR marker or SLAM lock, allowing the user to move freely from room to room. Sphero AR SDK

Sphero AR SDK

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR SDK Creator: Fabrizio Polo Organization: Orbotix, Inc. =*=*=*= Description: The Sphero Augmented Reality (AR) SDK is used to overlay a live view of the real world with virtual content. For gaming applications in particular, the goal is to render 3D content into the live scene so that it appears to be realistic and authentic. That’s where Sphero rolls in. Augmented reality gameplay with Sphero is simple and seamless for two reasons – Sphero is a robot, and Sphero is round. This allows us to employ a robotic fiducial, which provides never-before-seen freedom in characterizing the visual environment (since by definition a robot is a reprogrammable machine). With no auxiliary fiducial markers, Sphero can be effectively found and tracked at a distance, at any angle, and when partially obscured. A ball is the same from every angle, after all. Sphero AR also has the ability to impact the real world, whereas traditional augmented reality is limited to the screen. Not only can we make Sphero interact with virtual objects (collect coins, run over monsters, etc.), but we can also make Sphero respond to these objects (bumping into invisible walls, hitting fictional oil slicks). Just wait till you’re holding Sphero in your hand, looking at an augmented reality character through the screen of your device. It’s pretty awesome. Catchoom

Catchoom

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR SDK Creator: Catchoom Organization: Catchoom =*=*=*= Description: Supporting over 3 Million active users every month, Catchoom Image Recognition is fast, accurate, easy to use, and resilient. With our SDKs and example open source code or direct Recognition API, Catchoom allows developers, ISVs and integrators to give everyday objects a digital life. Our technology sets a new industry standard for 3D object recognition. Catchoom is not limited to recognition of flat or 2D Objects. Packaged goods, monuments and places can all be queried. Catchoom’s scalable, cloud-based system is built for a massive database search while maintaining the fastest round-trip object recognition time (0.5 seconds) and lowest false positive rate (under 1%), as benchmarked by Layar. Even in the most difficult illumination conditions, Catchoom delivers. Our solution expands the reach of Augmented Reality because even feature-phones can connect to our cloud-based recogntion, taking AR beyond high-CPU powered devices. With example client code for iOS, Android and Python (and more up coming), the Catchoom Recognition Service (CRS) allows developers to build a wide range of Image Recognition applications and services. Because we provide the means to integrate any tracking SDK into our solution, everything remains flexible. The CRS Recognition API conforms to REST (Representational state transfer) constraints. The CRS Management API enables bulk image upload and easy administration that provided scalability for developers beyond device limitations.   Where to find it: http://catchoom.com/product/image-recognition-saas/ Platforms: Mobile Additional Screenshots:...

Museum on the Market Square

Museum on the Market Square

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best Mobile AR App Creator: TWNKLS augmented reality Organization: TWNKLS augmented reality =*=*=*= Description: We believe that this project is unique in terms of size (surface area) and content (completeness and level of detail applied). AR has been applied on a very large scale but at the same time it is a unique mix of media: an integrated audio tour and 3D experience. Concept: Spijkenisse is a town nearby the city of Rotterdam. Our application is giving its inhabitants the old city centre back, by creating a link between the present and the past. At the central square, visitors can experience a precise reconstruction of 3D buildings that once stood there. And, while exploring these buildings, visitors can listen to stories of the people that once lived in them. The central square has become a virtual museum. In this project, AR has been applied on a large scale. Every visitor of the central square in Spijkenisse can view the historical centre of the town through the AR telescope. The AR telescope is a fixed outdoor installation that contains a camera and a computer. Alternatively, the app can be downloaded (iOS / Android) and used when standing at a ‘point of interest’. Special made tiles with Natural Future Markers indicate these points. Technology: The development of our Outdoor Museum application is based on the Unity 3D engine. For tracking, we are using Vuforia tracking engine supplemented with our in-house developed TileFusion technique. The tiles need to be scanned to determine the user’s location and direction, and the sensors in his smartphone enable the view to be correctly displayed. The application is available for iOS and Android on smartphones and tablets. Stark Armoury

Stark Armoury

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best Mobile AR App Creator: Jon Burns Organization: Ad-Dispatch =*=*=*= Description: About the project: Working with Tesco and Disney UK we launched an augmented reality campaign that continued building on our previous ‘retail-tainment’ concepts. The app was a unique way to spend time with Ironman where users could unlock access to the different Ironman suits then engage with a photo share with a life like 3D model of the superhero as well getting a chance to experience the weapons of Ironman. Previously, we saw our Avengers AR app (Superhero AR) breakthrough to the top 10 free entertainment apps in the app store and with this project leveraging the Ironman 3 cinematic release we are set to do it again. Currently averaging over 1000 downloads a day, with a campaign spreading over 6 months we’re already getting positive feedback. Why should we win: Leveraging QUALCOMM’s Vuforia and the gaming engine Unity, Ad-dispatch uses cutting edge technology to solve traditional marketing objectives. Tasked with driving foot traffic to retail and online the IM3 campaign served a unique interactive AR experience that became enhanced with in store and online signage. Players saw themselves in IM3 suits with proprietary face-tracking technology, launched IM weaponry in their world and interacted with IM suits in Tesco exclusive animations. Results: The IM3 app (stark armoury) was launched Apr 27 to coincide with in store and digital signage. This is our 3rd project with Marvel to support the launch of a cinematic release and to drive awareness of consumer projects with retail partners. And the measure of success is a retail strategy to drive traffic to store, online and position the retailer as a mobile retailer. While every instance and interaction is a measureable occurrence for us, and we know how much traffic we redirect to other apps, websites to pre-purchase product or even where people are sharing the experience we can’t yet share the results. The Avergers Campaign that just wrapped up with the holiday release of the DVD/ Blu-ray had over 5 billion social impressions. Those were people sharing in store AR pictures, experiences, articles, tweets, blogs etc. Where to find it: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/stark-armoury-at-tesco/id627567872?mt=8, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addispatch.ironman3 Platforms: Mobile Additional Screenshots:...
