Ultimarker

Ultimarker

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR Hardware Creator: Joris van Tubergen and Sander Veenhof Organization: Rooie Joris & SNDRV =*=*=*= Description: Will hardware or software innovations lead the way in the near future? Will augmented reality or 3D printing be having the most radical impact on the world of tomorrow by bringing DIY opportunities within the hands of everyone? Want something? Make it! If not “for real”, then virtual (Although that diffference will not be understood nor be relevant to future generations) If it’s up to Joris van Tubergen and Sander Veenhof, mixing these two techniques will be the most suitable approach for the semi-digital reality ahead of us. Combining the best of both worlds: living amongst tangible items with personalised manifestations because of their optional customizable virtual components. A reality shaped according to individual needs, ideas, wishes or moods. The Ultim-ar-ker project is an exploration of that hybrid future by augmenting an Ultimaker 3D-printer with a preview function of the model being printed. Besides being a showcase of a reality in which material and data merge, the ultimarker has a practical use too during the “1 euro per minute” printing sessions Joris van Tubergen is doing at public events. AR adds more liveliness to the otherwise lengthy printing process. Furthermore, additional real-time info about the printing progress is shown on an expandable augmented make-over of the cryptic quartz display of the Ultimaker printer. The set-up is based on a default Ultimaker with a paper marker attached on the front-side, to be downloaded from the webpage. While 3D printing thingiverse object nr 87078, open the “Ultimarker” channel within the Junaio app to experience this innovation on the cross-section of hardware and software.   Where to find it: If you have an Ultimaker, the webpage provides instructions on which Junaio channel to open to view it Platforms: Stationary Device Additional Screenshots:...

Clandestine: Anomaly

Clandestine: Anomaly

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best Mobile AR App Creator: Corey King Organization: ZenFri Inc. =*=*=*= Description: Clandestine: Anomaly is the next evolution in mobile gaming: the world’s first fully featured Emergent Reality Game (ERG). Think of it as reality’s expansion pack. We’ve mixed smart design with GPS and AR technologies to create a totally immersive, narrative-driven gaming experience. In your hand, you hold technology that reveals an unimaginable new layer of reality. A secretive organization – EDC – needs your skills and feet on the ground to detect and neutralize anomalies in the space-time continuum. These “anomalies” threaten the very fabric of reality and are breaking out all over the world – your world. The action is taking place in your city – even, literally, in your backyard. In Clandestine: Anomaly, you’re not a character in a fictional world: you are you, and your mobile device is a window into another layer of reality that is encroaching on our own. The world of Clandestine: Anomaly is all around you. Using GPS and Augmented Reality technologies your neighborhood is populated with 3D interactive characters and scenarios. Each player will experience the game as unique, one-of-a-kind story. Game design triggers help the game learn not only where your closest park is, but what locations matter to you most. No two players will every experience the same game twice. Throughout the game, you’ll collect alien nanotechnology, and parts programs through both missions and geocaching. Merging the two, you’ll assemble, and customize probes, utility drones and three story tall weapons for defense and attack.Through tower defense gameplay, you will literally defend your own community from attack. You’ll program and deploy arrays varying from alien creatures to futuristic war machines. After you strategically deploy your units, you will watch the epic battles play out in real time in the sky above you. In recon mode, you can command your arrays to focus their attacks on an enemy, call in an air strike, or recharge and repair them. Strategy is the key to victory. How you manage your resources and deploy your units will effect your success. Where to find it: Through the developers via Testflight Platforms: Mobile Additional Screenshots:...

SpiderSense

SpiderSense

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR Hardware Creator: Victor Mateevitsi Organization: Electronic Visualization Laboratory, University of Illinois at Chicago =*=*=*= Description: SpiderSense is a revolutionary technology that may change the way we perceive the environment around us. Recent scientific advances allow the use of technology to expand the number of forms of energy that can be perceived by humans. Smart sensors can detect hazards that human sensors are unable to perceive, for example radiation. This fusing of technology to human’s forms of perception enables exciting new ways of perceiving the world around us. SpiderSense is a wearable device that projects the wearer’s near environment on the skin and allows for directional awareness of objects around him. The millions of sensory receptors that cover the skin presents opportunities for conveying alerts and messages. Otolift Stairlift B2B tools

Otolift Stairlift B2B tools

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR for Enterprise Creator: TWNKLS Organization: TWNKLS augmented reality =*=*=*= Description: Otolift is a Dutch company that produces stair lifts which are sold worldwide through a dealer network. The stair lifts are used by elderly and disabled people. Otolifts’ vision is to have all their business processes run on an iPad so that their sales representatives can work as fast and efficient as possible. In addition to the visualization and configuration tool that supports the sales representatives during their sales process, TWNKLS has developed a measurement tool. With the measurement tool, taking the measurement of existing stair lifts becomes a simple task and the 3D reconstruction of it is easily accomplished. Direct feedback about the quality of the measurement taken, and a reduced error margin (1 ‰), results in a reliable and usable measurement. The output of the measurement is a file that shows the reconstructed stairs in a 3D model, which can be used without further adjustment in the stair lift production process by the designers of Otolift. Thanks to this application; less time is needed to take the measurements, whilst the quality of the measurement increases. It now being an automated process, measurements errors no longer occur which results in a higher efficiency. OBI 3D Finder

OBI 3D Finder

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR Campaign Creator: TWNKLS Organization: TWNKLS augmented reality =*=*=*= Description: OBI is the largest DIY Company in Germany. To inform her customers, OBI distributes 18 million prints of an advertisement flyer weekly. Once a month, the flyer contains extra information around a specific theme. TWNKLS has developed a mobile phone application for smartphones and tablets, called the OBI 3D Finder, which was released under the slogan: ‘play, collect, and win’. The most important strategic objectives were to amaze customers, generate a certain number of registrations for the OBI-app and to strengthen other online channels. Additionally, OBI wanted to build a reputation of being ‘innovative’. With the OBI 3D augmented reality ‘3D gewinnspiel’ and a copy of the OBI brochure, users could play a game and collect 3D items. Finding all the 3D experiences and collecting all the 3D items gave them access to a contest and the opportunity to win a prize. TWNKLS has designed and developed an iOS and Android application which enabled OBI to measure the results of their flyer by producing statistics and reports. Key numbers: Every installed application has been played 3 times. Of all people that downloaded the app, 58% has left their contact details. The average time played with the app was 5 minutes 17 seconds. From the app, many have followed the links to the mobile website of OBI and to their Facebook page. Conclusion: TWKLS has contributed to a successful and innovative campaign for OBI. Where to find it: http://twnkls.com/portfolio/obi3d/ Platforms: Mobile Additional Screenshots:...

Sphero AR SDK

Sphero AR SDK

Nomination for Auggie Award: Best AR SDK Creator: Fabrizio Polo Organization: Orbotix, Inc. =*=*=*= Description: The Sphero Augmented Reality (AR) SDK is used to overlay a live view of the real world with virtual content. For gaming applications in particular, the goal is to render 3D content into the live scene so that it appears to be realistic and authentic. That’s where Sphero rolls in. Augmented reality gameplay with Sphero is simple and seamless for two reasons – Sphero is a robot, and Sphero is round. This allows us to employ a robotic fiducial, which provides never-before-seen freedom in characterizing the visual environment (since by definition a robot is a reprogrammable machine). With no auxiliary fiducial markers, Sphero can be effectively found and tracked at a distance, at any angle, and when partially obscured. A ball is the same from every angle, after all. Sphero AR also has the ability to impact the real world, whereas traditional augmented reality is limited to the screen. Not only can we make Sphero interact with virtual objects (collect coins, run over monsters, etc.), but we can also make Sphero respond to these objects (bumping into invisible walls, hitting fictional oil slicks). Just wait till you’re holding Sphero in your hand, looking at an augmented reality character through the screen of your device. It’s pretty awesome.
